Sabatoru is a small island community of about 2000 inhabitants, situated in Nembe local government area of Bayelsa State, in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria, an area also known as Nembe Kingdom. Izon is the predominant language spoken in this area. About 60% of the population of this community are children and young adults and the major occupation of the people are farming and fishing. Access to the community is through boats and ferries as currently there is no bridge connecting this community to the hinterland. Social amenities as electricity, pipe borne water, access roads, communication networks and standard schools are almost not in existence: the only school in the community, Sabatoru Primary School, built by the State government is yet complete and is lacking in facilities and important structures. The school which currently has four teachers catering for about 100 pupils has a total of 12 classrooms of which only two are currently in use.
Currently, we have the Sabatoru primary school project running in the area which is aimed at addressing these gaps in the community, starting with education. Our project officer, trained through a patnership between TAI and Stepping Stones Nigeria, is on ground to supervise our activities in Sabatoru. Our aim is to transform Sabatoru community by addressing these needs. The above information and pictures below were gathered during our needs assessment in the community.
